Research Visa

A Research Visa is issued to a foreign research scholar for a period of 3 years or for the duration of the research project, whichever is earlier. Research Visa may be extended by FRRO /FRO concerned. The total period of the Visa may be restricted to the duration of the project as approved by the Institute of Affiliation or five years, whichever is less. Such foreign scholars may, if required, also be given extension for a period of not more than six months as the last and final extension even after completion of the project.

The research scholar will be required to furnish a brief synopsis of the research proposal in about 150 words and giving full justification (including the benefit he/she would get) for doing the research in India.

*Applicants of Pakistani origin are requested to see this link before applying for an Indian visa.

Visa not to be approved in following cases:-

  • Check if applicant is from prior reference country.
  • Work involves visits to restricted to protected areas.
  • Work involves political and social sensitive subjects.
  • If the institution in India is not recognised by UGC or AIU or there is doubt about the veracity of the documents, case will be referred to MHA, MEA and the nodal Ministry.

  • Duly filled up and printed copy of the Online Application Form (click here).
  • Valid Canadian/Foreign passport* (Original and Copy)
  • Proof of Address
  • Photograph (link)
  • Surrender Certificate (mandatory only for Indian origin foreign nationals)
  • Letter of recommendation / support from the institute in Canada
  • Original Admission Letter from Recognized Educational Institution from India
  • Subject of Research project with Synopsis (not more than 150 words)
  • Certificate of Registration of Educational Institution

  • Financial Arrangement letter
  • Letter for Student Exchange Program (If applicable)
  • Evidence of source of funding
